Air Wick was first introduced in 1943 in the United States and has been "Connecting people to nature" for over 70 years with its range of natural fragrance products. What most would recognize as the first modern air freshener was introduced in 1948. It delivers a fine mist of aroma compounds while remaining suspended in the air. It is based on a military technology for dispensing insecticides, but uses a chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) propellant as its propellant. In the 1950s, many companies began to introduce chemicals that counteract odors into scent formulas. These chemicals, designed to neutralize or destroy odors, included unsaturated esters, pre-polymers, and long-chain aldehydes.
By 1973, Air Wick had sales of $33.5 million, and earnings of $2.7 million, prompting the Swiss pharmaceutical company Ciba Geigy (now known as Novartis) to investigate purchasing them. Ciba Geigy took brief control of the company in 1974, before selling it to the British household products company Reckitt & Colman (now Reckitt Benckiser) in December 1984. Reckitt Benckiser retained ownership and remains the parent company of Air Wick to this day.
In the 1980s, aerosol air fresheners were phased out because of concerns about ozone destruction caused by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Air Wick has led the way in many other air freshener delivery methods since, including in-seat wafer air fresheners, scented candles, reed diffusers, potpourri, and heat release products.
The Airwick brand is owned by Reckitt Benckiser Group, a manufacturer and marketer of health, hygiene, post-natal and home products, that was first listed on the London stock exchange in 1888 . Besides Air Wick, Reckitt Benckiser has an expansive portfolio of other brands in the health and hygiene space. Some of which include:
