Small Scanners, Big Performance

As the function of our technology increases in opposite proportion to its size, we may soon arrive at the day when our gadgets become so small that we lose sight of them entirely. The newest laptops on the market are lighter and faster than they were just a few years ago, and the newest cell phones positively miniscule. Why should scanners be any different? Mobile professionals, those highly functional individuals who scorn most office workers’ sedentary employment lifestyle, often have to make copies, join in on conference calls, pen memos, and send e-mail on the go. But they aren’t the only ones who could benefit from a portable, lightweight scanner. It’s often necessary in the course of a day to scan important photos or documents, receipts, and business cards for saving and sending, whether you’re corporate commuting, building and maintaining an electronic contact database, or simply a hard-core scanning enthusiast (we’re sure there are at least one or two of you out there).

At Home
When you need to scan old family photos, letters, medical records, or financial documents, there are a number of scanners available to suit your needs without adding to the clutter. The Canon CanoScan LiDE 25 is a compact flatbed with 1200 x 2400 dpi resolution that weighs only 3.53 lbs. You can take it with you from room to room or house to house, anywhere you may need to go, without straining your scanning arm. Another flatbed scanner, the Fujitsu fi-60F offers 600 x 600 dpi resolution and weighs in at only 2.0 lbs.

At Work
It’s possible to get speedy, high quality scanning done at work even without costly departmental or production scanners. It’s also possible to get a scanner that is lightweight, unobtrusive, and more powerful than your neighborhood flatbed. One of Fujitsu’s newest sheetfed scanners, the ScanSnap S500 has a width of less than one foot and features a 50 page automatic document feeder, a scanning speed of 18 pages per minute (PPM), and weighs only 5.9 lbs (less without the power adapter). The Kodak i30 is a simplex sheetfed scanner that can fit almost anywhere, delivering 25 PPM, one button functionality, and 7.9 lbs of streamlined scanning performance.

At a Rest Stop on Interstate 10 Outside of Las Cruces, New Mexico
Sometimes your car, in addition to becoming your bed, your kitchen, your closet – though hopefully not your bathroom – can also become your office. If that’s the case, you need room for your notebook computer, work material, phone, coffee, headache-relieving medicine, and what’s left of your sanity. You’re working in limited space, so your scanner shouldn’t take up more of it than it has to. Enter the Visioneer RoadWarrior. It’s small enough to fit into a briefcase or large purse, weighs a mere 10.6 oz, and offers searchable PDF. And the Targus Mini USB Business Card Scanner lets you give your pockets a break by turning all the business cards you accumulate in the course of your work into a virtual electronic rolodex.

It’s easy to get great function and form from your business tools. Getting a portable, lightweight scanner to use at home, at work, or on the go is as simple as making a little room on your desk or in your car and placing an order. These scanners could be the ideal solution to balancing your need for performance and convenience. At least until technology takes the next obvious leap and enables us to scan documents with microchips implanted onto our eyeballs. And when that day finally comes, we hope that financial reports and interoffice memos will have become at least a little more interesting.
