InfoTrends, a leading worldwide market research and strategic consulting firm for the digital imaging and document solutions industry, conducted a product comparison analysis on Total Cost of Printing for Hewlett Packard's Officejet Pro 8000/8500 series with comparable color laser printers. The study is in regard to printing costs for small business environments and is based on some basic principles: ink costs less than toner; inkjet print heads have relatively few moving parts; and the quality that can be delivered is high.

Four competitive color laser printers, both single function and multi-function, were selected for the study, based on comparable specifications including average selling price, color and monochrome print speeds, and duty cycles. Here is a table enlisting the selected models.

InfoTrends carried out several other research studies and surveys to determine typical yearly page volumes and standard color and monochrome page coverage for small business environments. Here is the final analysis:



Methodology Used for Calculating Cost-Per-Page and Total Printing Costs

Cost-Per-Page: All replaceable supplies for each model were included to calculate cost-per-page. Now, inkjet printers require few replaceable supplies compared with laser printers. So, HP Officejet Pro series required only individual color ink cartridges compared to laser printers that required other replaceable components such as fuser units, OPC belts and waste toner kits. InfoTrends states, "These additional supplies components add to the total cost of printing and are often overlooked when users consider total operating costs".

InfoTrends found significant differences in total cost of printing for both single function and multifunction printers. Again, the analysis was based on a 1, 2 and 3 year usage period for small business environments. Clearly, HP's Officejet Pro 8000/8500 series are the most economical and Samsung models are the most expensive.

Based on their assumptions and methodology, InfoTrends concluded, "HP's inkjet products can not only deliver color printing at 50% the cost of competitive laser products, but in some cases the cost savings can be substantially greater than that".

Thus, HP's Officejet Pro 8000/8500 series are a strong alternative to laser printers for small businesses.
