The NETGEAR ProSafe 8-port Gigabit VPN Firewall provides both secure IPsec site-to-site tunnels and IPsec secure access for remote clients. Employing a true firewall with customizable firewall rules, this VPN router is a high-performance, SNMP-manageable, network solution that furnishes multidimensional security including denial-of-service (DoS) protection, stateful packet inspection (SPI), URL keyword filtering, logging, reporting, and real-time alerts. Eight Gigabit LAN ports keep your data moving at top speed. With Network Address Translation (NAT) routing and classical routing, all the users in your small office can access your broadband connection at the same time.
I've always liked the NetGear product line because (I'm a Mac user) their products, while not being specifically Mac friendly, don't go out of the way to not work with Macs. I can stand that. I had the previous version of this router the FVS318 with 100Mb wired switching (this one is 1Gbit). I liked that one but wanted to update my infrastructure here in the home office with the 1Gbit wired switch. I also hoped that some other improvement would be seen. In particular I never could get the UPnP feature to work with Back to My Mac remote access feature of Apple's MobileMe. I sorta expected whatever was going on there would be fixed.
Well no. It's like UPnP does not exist. Whatever the issue is may be resolved in time because I've logged a support ticket with NetGear and I've posted on their user forum. But I have to say that when you call something 'Plug n' Play' it better be 'Plug n' Play' with at least any major vendor's products. Apple is a major vendor. So I'm perplexed why this has not been tested or even tried by NetGear.
And I'm not finding any documentation outside of the setup leaflet in the box. I appreciate saving paper but I did not even find a PDF version of a User Guide on the CD (needed only for WIndows).
But the good news is I love everything else about the router. I really do. It's fast, easy, not expensive, small, and easy to administer. The web front end to the admin tools is simple (albeit a bit ugly and uninspired).
It just works and mostly I'm happy but disappointed I can't get UPnP to work with my Mac network.
Service and delivery comments:
I ordered this via GoogleCheckout which I HIGHLY recommend. SuperWarehouse was good to deal with and I got the product in moderate time considering I asked for UPS Ground.
